Hillcrest Central at a glance

Hillcrest is a well-established community renowned for its affluent houses, scenic views, and lush flora. Due to its proximity to major schools, commercial centers, and recreational amenities, the area is regarded as one of the most desirable residential areas on the Upper Highway.

Hillcrest's property market is thriving, with significant demand for both rental and sales homes. Families, young professionals, and seniors searching for a secure, upmarket neighborhood with a strong sense of community gravitate to the area. Hillcrest's properties range from huge family homes to more affordable apartments and townhouses, giving it a diversified market. Despite its popularity, Hillcrest remains one of the more economically affluent neighborhoods in the Upper Highway area, making it a popular choice for those wishing to invest in the area.

History of the area:

Hillcrest has a strong history dating back to the early 1900s. The area was previously a dairy farm named Albinia, owned by William Gillitt, who also gave his name to the nearby community of Gillitts.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Hillcrest had a surge in infrastructure development, transforming the once-peaceful country town into a major real estate destination.

The region has grown and attracted new residents throughout the years, and it is currently regarded as one of the most desirable residential districts in KwaZulu-Natal.

Climate:

Residents in Hillcrest may enjoy the mild weather almost all year. While winter nights in July and August may be cool, with lows around 7°C, daily highs will be about 20°C. During the warmest months of the year, January to March, temperatures typically reach the low to mid-30s.

Local schools:

Pupils at Hillcrest have the choice of starting their education at the Hillcrest Pre-Primary School, progressing to the Hillcrest Primary School, and eventually graduating at the Hillcrest High School. Highbury Preparatory School, a primary school for boys, and Curro Hillcrest Christian Academy, which serves students of all ages and grade levels, are two private schools in the area.

Local healthcare:

There is no shortage of healthcare options in and around Hillcrest. Busamed Hillcrest Private Hospital is the nearest private hospital. Hillcrest Medical Centre is ideally accessible for any medical, dental, or physiotherapy requirements.

Shopping malls:

Hillcrest may be regarded as a nirvana for shopaholics due to the plethora of shopping centers in the vicinity, including Hillcrest Corner, Lillies Quarter Lifestyle Center, Hillgate Shopping Center, The Colony Shopping Center, Christians Village Shopping Center, and Hillcrest Richdens Village Center.

Distance from major places (Airport/CBD):

The travel distance between Hillcrest and King Shaka International Airport is roughly 60 kilometers. It will take you around 50 minutes to get there in normal traffic. Durban's Downtown is around 30 kilometers or a 25-minute drive away.

Restaurants:

Hillcrest is home to some of the top restaurants in the Upper Highway. Lupa Osteria Hillcrest and Stretta Café and Grill are great selections for Italian cuisine.  Oscars Café is a well-known venue for gourmet sandwiches, salads, and burgers, as well as a special low-carb menu for individuals on a banting diet.

Attractions that are unique:

The Camelot Golf Club, nestled in the heart of Hillcrest, is a golfer's dream. The 9-hole course is beautiful, with tranquil settings, sloping fairways, and well-maintained greens that make golfing a pleasure. When players need to refresh with exquisite food and beverages, they can visit The Goblet Pub and Restaurant.

The Giba Gorge Mountain Bike Park appeals to both novice and experienced riders. It has multiple well-defined trails as well as an obstacle course with ramps and bridges. In comparison to the steep, 5-kilometer-long green trail, the orange trail is twice as long yet meanders around the valley.

A journey on the legendary Inchanga Choo Choo train is a must-do activity while in Hillcrest. On this incredible tour, you will be able to see the breathtaking panorama of the Valley of a Thousand Hills. While the train stops, there is also a craft market with food sellers and a picnic area where passengers may relax. You may also visit the Museum at Inchanga, which is housed in the Station Master's Residence close to the station.

Hillcrest is also located along the route of the world-renowned Comrades Marathon, which takes runners past the town on their way to Durban or Pietermaritzburg each year. There is also the Springvale Nature Reserve, which allows tourists to enjoy magnificent pathways that follow the valley's flow. Camelot Golf Course, Augusta Golf Course, and the magnificent Cotswold Downs are all located in Hillcrest.
