Waterfall at a glance

Waterfall is a quiet suburb in KwaZulu-Natal, located approximately 36 kilometers from Durban Central. This countryside village is close enough to enjoy Durban's amenities and facilities but far enough to avoid the city's hustle and bustle.

Property in Waterfall primarily consists of spacious freestanding homes on large plots. These country homes have a slightly older, rustic charm that complements their stunning surroundings. Waterfall is especially appealing to families due to its distance from inner-city pollution and low crime rates. The area offers children the freedom to play safely outdoors, plenty of fresh air, and a peaceful environment within a close-knit community.

History:

Waterfall's history dates back to 1851 when the 6000-acre farm Langefontein was subdivided. The area known as Upper Langefontein is now called Waterfall. The Dinkelman family, who owned most of Upper Langefontein, brought electricity to the town and commissioned the building of Inanda Road. By 1900, Waterfall had only two shops, the nearest school was in Hillcrest (1910), and the nearest doctor was 18 km away in Pinetown. In 1959, George Rowles acquired part of Waterfall Farm, ran a prime herd of dairy cows, and began developing Waterfall as a residential area with a shopping complex in 1967.

Climate:

Part of the Upper Highway area, Waterfall is cooler than its coastal neighbor, Durban. The climate is mostly mild, warm, and temperate with significant rainfall, even in the driest months. December is the hottest month, averaging 23°C, while July is the coldest month, averaging 13°C.

Schools:

Waterfall schools include Curro, Waterfall Pre-Primary, Waterfall Preparatory, and Waterfall College.

Healthcare, Shopping Centres, and Distance from Key Points:

Waterfall offers many medical facilities, such as Crompton Private Hospital, Link Hills Medical Centre, Hillcrest Hospital, and Busamed Private Hospital. The newly built Watercrest Mall provides residents with grocery shopping, clothing retailers, fast food, restaurants, and a movie theatre. The M3 offers easy access to the city center, approximately 30 minutes away, and King Shaka International Airport is a 45-minute drive.

Restaurants and Special Attractions:

Waterfall offers diverse dining options, including Indian, Portuguese, and Japanese cuisine, as well as steakhouses, bistros, delis, bakeries, and fast food outlets. There are many activities for all ages in and around Waterfall, including a water park, Inanda Dam for fishing and camping, a picnic spot in Krantzkloof Nature Reserve, an animal farm, and a wildlife park.
